Brushes, Hammers, Paste and Nails
Last weekend I took the opportunity to go to the Musee Rodin to see the exhibition Capturing the Model, Rodin, 300 Drawings from 1890 to 1917. I was surprised to see one section of the show dedicated to “Cutting Out and Assembling.”
Here is a LINK to a few featured works online, among them one cut-out.
And here are a couple of line from the brochure:
“The destruction of a figure from a drawing he had already completed by cutting it out was, for him, the source of a new work.”
“Far from being simple atelier techniques, Rodin’s cut-outs and assemblages are elements that have acquired the stature of works in and of themselves. Through the audacity of the process and the dynamism of the figures, they presage the development of one of the most innovative means of expression of the 20th century.”
