Femke van der Rijst said… Thank you! :) I like your Neil Young piece! ;) Very nice.
Good info, Mark. Thanks.
It sounds like by the time you're through, you've built a cradled panel similar to the commercial ones I mentioned.
Mark, do you use primer or gesso on the BFK? I did a series of powdered graphite/pencil drawing on BFK and the surface got a little "fuzzy." Is this an issue for you?
For a while I was gluing two pieces of Bristol board together with grain perpendicular if, indeed, there is any grain in Bristol. Same as Jeff, I was weighting stuff between books with silicon release paper. Still warped some.
Now I've found Ampersand's flat hardboard panels (I'm sure there are other brands). Does not warp and seems to withstand a lot of abuse -- painting, sanding, glueing, scraping, more glueing. etc. Some interesting pre-surfaced varieties available. If I worked larger I'd probably try the cradled panels.
I can't find them here so had to order from the US which makes them pretty expensive but I think worth it in the end.

Jeff Taylor said… A few more questions:
1. How do you keep your artwork flat when you're done so it doesn't dry warped? I've been covering mine with wax paper between heavy hardbound books. Do art stores sell some kind of tool/stand that would clamp down on multiple pieces at a time and let them dry flat?
2. Where can you go to take classes on collage technique?
Jeff Taylor said… Thanks again!
Jeff Taylor said… Thanks a bunch! I like yours alot! It looks like you've taken some serious classes in it though! I'm just messing around with magazines, scizzors, and Elmer's. What glue would you recommend to a "collagist" like myself who likes to make collages and use them as postcards? I've been using Elmer's and the cards often warp in the mail due to it's being water soluble. I'm looking for a glue that's more hardening, but still easy to clean up. Any advice would be appreciated!
Mark, I'm enjoying your work.
Also, enjoying the fact that you're in W.Va. Although I'm now living in Paris, I was born and raised in W.Va. Not to mention that I'm a big Tom Waits fan.
