Material items that surpassed their intended life-time - think of fallen branches, trees cut - lie prey to rot and worm. This creates a new structure - temporary - till the pase of compost has been reached. Pick up the item in this phase, and enhance (enlighten) the still visible shape, by accentuation of the resistant part. Note, scraping off, scouring of the more rotten parts, visualize decay. The harder, more robust part, are at the basis of a new shape. At safe distance from ourselves, becomes transience tangible.
Comparable is the picking of material, that was ascribed a certain function once, but that have become outdated in the human eye. Form and shape are closely linked. The Saw, hammer and chisel used at demolition (or transformation) affect this shape (and function) but often there remain sufficient points of recognition. By placement, and assembly, with use of construction means, such as screw, coupler, glue, the items are put back in an apparent illusionary function. On the one hand, signs of decay may be kept or enhanced (transparent lacquer) while on the other hand holes or cracks can be repaired, enhancing the illusion of a new function.
That an artists makes tribute to such thrown away material, may point to irritation towards a throw-away society. Using such materials in works of art, in no way leads to improvement towards a more durable society. But it might lead to after-thought or reflection, or a smile at times.
