"Interested if may know Arthur any places in the bay area for finding sculptural assemblage junk, shops, yards, restoration hardware places. I have researched a little and haven't come up with much, thought perhaps to ask you. Thanks, Michael"

"My friend John Reed lived at the Ferus Gallery as an in house artist when Kienholz and Wally Hopps were there in the 50's. I did a tribute website to them at www.ferusgallery.com and they were major influences on me as a young artist. John…"

Kienholtz Assemblage

This guy is great. We just got to check this piece, which is, like 2' high and almost 5' wide, at a Bonham's auction preview which I mention in a blog I just posted. It's got a link to the catalog which has other collages and assemblages.

Gourds

At Urban Ore someone has thrown away a bunch of big gourds that they had started to make thumb pianos out of. There were gourds with just one side cut off, and ones that also had a 3/4" wooden face glued onto them, with a hole in it and a wooden bar across the face like a guitar has to hold the ends of the strings. Plenty good-looking. People were snapping them up -- some were planning to make a birdhouse out of theirs, and a woman was going to make masks out of hers, although she had ones with…See More

"Hi, Mary -- thanks for the support. I really like what you're doing, too. I've got to show you a big collage that I did recently, "These worried blues ain't bad" -- it's eerily like some of the work that you have…"

Park Bench

You can really sit on this piece. The aluminum back is the same kind of road sign that I used in "Worried Mind Blues". Those green park-bench standards came out of a dumpster down the way; it kills me to think that they'd probably be buried in the…

Worried Mind Blues

"Thanks; the colors are actually richer than this washed-out pic shows. I scored the yellow piece -- I think it's like the side flap that covered the engine of a Caterpillar tractor or something -- out in West Marin in the garage of a place that…"

Profile Information

What kind of art do you do?
I work primarily with found objects and metal, although I seem to get my pieces together without a lot of welding. I like the patinas that old metal gets. My stuff, which is usually medium-size and generally doesn't hang on the wall, has the feel of early Rauschenberg, with hints of Duchamp. I do some outdoor stuff, but not a lot.
What is your website address?
arthurcomings@gmail.com
What is the guiding principle in your art?
Being true to my own junk-loving aesthetic, and avoiding anything that might please the crowd.

Kienholtz at B&B auction

My son and I just went over to San Francisco to catch the preview of Bonham and Butterfield's latest auction, coming up on May 3. Some interesting collages and assemblages there, including one by Kienholtz that's almost five feet wide. Here's the link to the online catalog, which is very nice:… Continue
